FIGHTING FOR LEJEUNE JUSTICE AFTER FIVE DECADES OF DISEASE AND DECEIT Camp Lejeune Attorneys

What Happened at Camp Lejeune?

The tragedy of Camp Lejeune occurred between 1953 and 1987 when wells at the United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, were contaminated with industrial solvent compounds, including trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride. This chemical contamination resulted from inadequately maintained waste disposal systems that allowed industrial solvents to seep into the base’s water supply.

The contamination was largely unrecognized until 1984 when a small group of Marines who were living on the base began to report a variety of health problems, primarily birth defects among their children and several common cancers among family members. All of these individuals had been exposed to the contaminated water for years before it was recognized as a potential source of harm.

The military realized its mistake only after much study by environmental scientists and lawyers, but by then thousands of people had already been exposed to the toxic chemicals. Many suffered from long-term health complications such as cancer, infertility, birth defects, and other serious medical conditions related to their exposure. In some cases, there have even been confirmed cases of fatal illnesses linked directly to the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. It is estimated that over 1 million people may have consumed or otherwise been exposed to contaminated drinking water while stationed or living at Camp Lejeune during this time period. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2012 was passed in an attempt to right these wrongs.

This law allowed for those individuals who served on active duty at Camp Lejeune between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987, and later experienced adverse health effects from the contaminated water to be eligible for healthcare services and compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

In addition, the Act also provided for an extension of the statute of limitations for Veterans to bring civil actions against those responsible for their exposure. The act also clarified that these civil actions are exempt from any applicable state statutes of repose which would otherwise have prevented such suits.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act has provided much-needed relief to thousands of veterans and their families who suffered due to the contamination of water at Camp Lejeune. As one of the architects of this crucial law, our firm’s Camp Lejeune attorneys are dedicated to helping victims of this tragedy get the compensation that they deserve.
